The self and the other
Apr. 20th, 2010 10:52 pmFor my final project in my Science Fiction literature class we have to pick a topic related to science fiction and write a 750 word essay on it and do a 15-20 minute presentation on the same topic. For my topic I have chosen the self and the other as represented in science fiction. For those of you who are unsure of what this means, the self in science fiction is generally represented as the known, while the other is the unknown. Say we have an alien force invading earth, the self would be the human race while the other would be the aliens. But the other is not strictly limited to aliens. The other could represent anyone or anything that is out of the norm or that doesn't fit in.
I still don't have a specific thesis pinned down, but I was thinking of doing the others journey to become part of the self. For examples I was thinking of using Ronon Dex (Stargate Atlantis), Teal'c (Stargate SG-1), The companions (Doctor Who) and possibly Zim (invader Zim). So I come to ask you guys if you have any links to anything that will help me in the instance, any good character studies or Meta in regards to these characters. Also if you can think of any other good characters for this let me know, shout it out here in the comments below, i will be glad for any help, my thoughts seem to be all over the place for this one.
