Dull boy by Sarah Cross ***** And My superhero outfit!
Super Heroes, Super Heroes, Super Heroes! I have been surrounded by them lately. What with my Dad buying every superhero movie in sight, my friends pushing comic books on my and getting ready for Comic-Con you would think I would be sick of super Heroes! Not So! Sarah Rees Brennan recommended Dull boy by Sarah Cross. Since I have loved everything she has recommended I went out and bought it. After an excruciatingly long wait for the book to ship out from Amazon (No bookstores in my area carried it) It finaly came. I ripped it open and admired the awesomeness of the cover and then set it down. I was so busy this week helping with C.Y.T.’s production of The Wizard of Oz I had no time for anything else. But when the play was over I came home and picked up the book.
I was not sure exactly what to expect because there are so many different takes on Super Heroes. I was pleasantly surprised. The first thing that caught my attention was how stylized the book was. It has the comic ben-day dots and the Comic book font that the author’s name is printed in! I love books even if they aren’t pretty looking, but being one drawn to graphic design and layout things (I hate drawing things by hand!) I was ecstatic. It was gorgeous to look at. And not only was it pretty, but it was well written too.
I picked up the book around 8:00 P.M. and from the very first page I read I could not put it down. I ended up staying up until 1:30 in the morning finishing this book. She starts out with the Main character, Avery talking about wearing costumes.
“Maybe I need a costume. Trust me-I don’t want to wear a costume. Skintight spandex isn’t really my thing, the ski-mask-plus-bathing-suit-combo didn’t exactly inspire confidence when I tried it on (please forget I even mentioned that) and where am I supposed to find a leather jumpsuit?”
From this sentence I was hooked. I loved Avery’s observations so much. Yes I do know that most of these have probably been brought up in some T.V. show/Movie/Comic Book/Book before but I don’t care. Seeing these things always makes me smile. And Avery’s character just gets better from there. He prowls the streets looking for ways he can help but all he comes across are cats up in trees and sixth graders picking on second graders! I love this to no end because when prowling your safe suburban neighborhood and the area around it, if you live in a relatively safe part of town, there will be no horrible crimes happening.
Sarah Cross makes a believable superhero novel. As mentioned above Avery doesn’t find much crime to fight at first. And when Avery discovers his powers he doesn’t immediately hit the streets, he is shocked and doesn’t believe his powers. And not only are her characters believable but she makes references to other comic book heroes! Among them are Batman, the X-men and Iron man. Not only does she reference other super heroes but she references things of my generation that make my smile like and laugh like this quote
“My mom acts like having at-home access to video games will ruin my chances of going to college, turn me into a serial killer, and ensure that I never get a girlfriend because I’ll be too busy propositioning hookers in Grand Theft Auto.”
I also love her characters so much that I want to marry them, but I won’t say too much about them because I don’t want to spoil anything!
Avery is awesome beyond words and an amazing protagonist. He is witty, funny and interesting and it was a joy to read his perspective of things.
Then we have Sophie the anime/gamer girl who also sews! She is a girl after my own heart! I love her to death!
Then there is Catherine! I love her not only because she shares my name [Same spelling too! I think it’s okay to write Catherine with a K but if there is a Y anywhere in the name (like Kathryn) I would have cried I hate that spelling of the name) but she is also full of awesome sauce!
The plot was good too, there was action, mystery, intrigue, and it was full of awesomeness. I t kept me turning page after page to see what would happen next. It had a nice flow as well; sometimes I would keep reading just because I wanted to know more about the characters, and sometimes for the plot.
Overall it was an amazing book. A fun read that went by amazingly fast. The characters were real and fun to learn about, the plot was well written, and it made me laugh time and time again! I would highly reccoment that everyone go read this book! Here is a picture of my super hero outfit! Actualy not a superhero outfit! But I feel like an awesome Action Movie Hero girl when I wear it! It is something I made for the fashion show at school. It is a punk Lolita style outfit that I designed myself. I made the crown (Gothic Lolita bible instructions), the choker and the skirt. I am also wearing it to comic-con this year! I hope I don't melt in it! Las year I wore This outfit (pic #1 and Pic #2) and I melted while walking the booths!
Look for more posts about the fashion show and The Wizard of OZ. They will be posted when I am not so dead tired! XD
